I was thinking about this today...Why are bosses so strung up about catching pictures of employees holding an alcoholic beverage? For instance, in 2009 a Georgia state teacher was fired after her boss allegedly saw pictures of her holding a beer on her facebook. (Source: CBSAtlanta)
I understand it is unprofessional to show up to work drunk but:
1)Most professionals who own "college degree jobs" have (obviously) been to college! And those who have been to college are subject to an environment full of drinking. Additionally, 6.6% of employees in full time jobs report heavy drinking, defined as drinking five or more drinks per occasion on five or more days in the past 30 days. (Source) Therefore, we already know people drink!
2)I believe the work environment and a social life are two different aspects of living. I am capable of dedicating 100% of my time and energy to my job when I'm working without having it interfere with my social life and vice versa! What about that Georgia teacher? Was there any evidence she was drunk on the job? No! She simply had a picture on her facebook of her drinking AFTER work. A perfectly acceptable time to have FUN!
3)And what about those high profile actors and singers? Snoop Dogg has his own malt liqour! How many times have you read in the tabloids that Britney Spears was seen outside the club stumbling and mumbling? Yet since they celebrities they are allowed to get away with portraying themselves as party animals!
So what do you guys think? Should it be acceptable to post pictures of yourselves drinking? Let us know in the comments!
